Do People Want the Truth?

Lately, I have been reading a book about the rise of a certain cult in America. There are many, and the identity of this one is not important, but this cult was said to answer questions that established religions were unwilling or unable to answer. Of course, one of the established religions was Christianity.

This was after World War II, and although the good guys won, people had legitimate questions about war, violence, and death. Was peace on earth even possible? Would there be a third World War? This new cult had all the answers while established religions like Christianity had none. At least that is the story the cult tells.

But then I got to thinking about C.S. Lewis and others like him, Christians who were answering life’s biggest questions during World War II. Lewis had a radio broadcast called Right and Wrong: A Clue to Meaning in the Universe. It aired as the war raged, and later those addresses were published as Mere Christianity. But if this is true, then why would this cult say that Christianity had no answers or solutions for the world’s troubles? It is simple. Some did not like the answers Christianity gave.

Christianity deals with truth. Our Lord Jesus is truth. We do not get to make up our answers to life’s hardest questions. If we are asked, “Why is there so much violence and death?” We must answer, “Because we rebelled against God and brought sin and death into this world.” If we are asked, “How can we rid this world of violence and death?” We must answer, “In so far as that is possible before the return of Jesus, we must all now bow the knee to Jesus, trust Him for salvation, and follow Him as our Lord.”

As Christians, we must be ready and willing to answer life’s hardest questions, but even when we are ready and willing and answer those questions, many people will not like our answers. Even so, having unpopular answers is not the same as having no answers. The fact is, we have true answers in Christ. The question is, do people want the truth?

Romans 1:18 “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who

suppress the truth in unrighteousness…”
